Gullah neighborhoods on Hilton Head Island were established in the late 1860s. These historic neighborhoods are clustered together on the north end of Hilton Head Island and make up what has traditionally been called the native islander communities.
Each neighborhood had unique characteristics and individuals with essential skills that enabled the communities to be self-sufficient. They were linked by commonalities such as places of worship, food processing mills, community stores, one-room school houses, waterway access and land where several generations of Gullah descendants lived.
